When the provincial government of Quebec legislated that Dollard des Ormeaux (DDO) be amalgamated into the greater City of Montreal along with other municipalities they were met with fierce opposition, which eventually forced a referendum. In fact, the debate was so heated that Dollard residents even mentioned joining the Province of Ontario should Quebec gain its independence from Canada. However, the people spoke and overwhelmingly voted to remain distinct and the borough regained its autonomy in 2006. This idyllic community has grown over the years and has remained a popular place to live. A major condo and real estate developer Les Propriértés Belcourt Inc. was instrumental in the development of the borough ever since the 1950’s. It’s ideally situated on the West Island with easy access to great shopping centers like the Galeries des Sources, Marche de l’Ouest and the Fairview Shopping Centre as well as a number of smaller centres. Restaurants, specialty food stores, shops, fashion boutiques, large department and grocery stores and other retailers can be found throughout the area. It’s a condo lover’s cornucopia of consumables. Condominiums for sale or rent are plentiful and offer a choice assortment of models, sizes, floor plans and amenities including those offering executive services. The region is serviced by an efficient transportation system of buses and there are train links to downtown Montreal as well as express buses that link with the metro system at the Cote Vertu and du College stations. There are plenty of schools for those with kids and excellent recreation facilities throughout the area for young and old alike. Sports activities abound and everything from soccer to swimming can be enjoyed. The large DDO Civic Centre offers swimming courses to young and old. It has a large pool with a high diving tower and a training pool where swimming instruction is given. There are also many arenas for hockey, ringette, speed skating, figure skating etc. Cultural and art centers are also available and offer an array of activities and functions.
