The City of Dorval for many years was known for its airport of the same name. Today the airport has been renamed Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in honor of the late Canadian Prime Minister and native son of Quebec. Located on the northwest part of the island of Montreal, Dorval has access to the St. Lawrence River and is close to the Royal Yacht Club. The waterway is an important aspect of the community and makes for pleasant summers of water-skiing, sailing and recreational boating.
The history of Dorval can be traced back over 300 years, making it one of Canada’s oldest settlements. It became an official city in 1956 and has grown ever since. The airport is the main employer in the region and also occupies most of the landmass, but the construction of Dorval Gardens shopping mall helped to attract other small businesses and homebuyers. Real estate is in demand; even the airport is planning to expand but has its own land, which it has leased out over the years.
For travelers Dorval is a great place because of its proximity to the airport. Just zip over to the airport and you’re on your way. Condos can be found all over Dorval including executive style condos in the old Dorval Village. They offer a complete array of services. There are ample schools, parks and all the amenities you’d expect from such a long-standing community. Nestled just off the shore is the tiny island of ?le Dorval, a summer cottage area that is accessible by a private ferry service that links it to the mainland. It’s a lovely spot for summer picnics and private getaways. The area boasts a pristine water system and quiet retreat away from the busy city. Only a handful of people live there permanently.
There are train and bus services linking Dorval to other West Island communities as well as to downtown Montreal. All kinds of entertainment is available from restaurants and shopping, to the local golf course. The town itself is situated away from the airport so that there is little noise to be heard from the airplane traffic.
Seeing as the airport is located there, Dorval is the first stop for many newcomers to Montreal. It welcomes weary travelers by land, sea or air and offers all kinds of affordable accommodations. It is also known for its quaint cafes and the rustic charm of its Old Village center. For anyone considering renting or buying a condo in Montreal it is a great place to settle. It is less than 10 minutes from downtown Montreal and a stone throw from the airport, making it the ideal place for the avid traveler.
Real estate prices can be from medium to high, depending on what kind of a condominium you want to buy. You can also opt to rent. Rental fees are about the same, it all depends on what kind of a place your budget can afford. But one thing is sure; you will thoroughly enjoy your stay in Dorval. |
